Oman vistas - photos, travel tips, insights, Musandam and Muscat, Oman

Discover Oman. Take a photo trip to Muscat, Nakhal Fort and the springs at Rustaq. How should women dress to visit the Grand Mosque in Al Ghubrah? Spy by boat on the developing resort at Barr al Jissah.  Cruise the fiords and watch the smugglers in Musandam, northern Oman, overlooking the Straits of Hormuz.

My thanks to Khasab Travel and Tours and to the Golden Tulip Khasab Hotel for part-sponsoring my trip to Musandam in March 2004. For current news and headlines about Oman, visit newsBriefsoman

Description:
Take note if you are a lady. This is how to dress for the mosque. Shirts must button up and have long sleeves, and you must wear loose trousers down to the ankles, not dresses. You must cover all your hair and wrap the scarf round your neck too.

Description:
I was refused admission dressed like this, even though I would have covered my head with the scarf. The shirt was partially see-through, and the trousers were too short. Be advised!

Though dimly seen here, the cupola is gilded and intricately decorated. The chandeliers, of which there are many in the prayer halls, are made of crystal.

Description:
An Omani friend has told me that the proper description of the Grand Mosque is Al Jama'a. It stands on the southern side of the main highway, Al Ghubrah, Muscat. Ample parking, but only open to non-Muslims 3 hours daily, Saturday thru to Wednesday.

Description:
The Grand Mosque in Al Ghubrah, Muscat, took several years to build and ran over-budget. It is constructed from the finest materials. The exterior floors are all polished marble. Nonetheless, it is a magnificent building.
