Oman vistas - photos, travel tips, insights, Musandam and Muscat, Oman

Discover Oman. Take a photo trip to Muscat, Nakhal Fort and the springs at Rustaq. How should women dress to visit the Grand Mosque in Al Ghubrah? Spy by boat on the developing resort at Barr al Jissah.  Cruise the fiords and watch the smugglers in Musandam, northern Oman, overlooking the Straits of Hormuz.

My thanks to Khasab Travel and Tours and to the Golden Tulip Khasab Hotel for part-sponsoring my trip to Musandam in March 2004. For current news and headlines about Oman, visit newsBriefsoman

Description:
Looking for a night out on the town? This is supposed to be THE restaurant in town. Otherwise you need to visit the hotels.
cables_mosque_khasab.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Electricity and phone cables criss cross the streets of Khasab. Reminds me of Seattle.
car_park.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Why a picture of a car park? Well, it's the business centre of Khasab town and you will notice that they are all working trucks. No saloon cars here, for travelling the dirt roads up the mountains.

Description:
The trees alleviate the concrete structures in town. The trading centre is known as the souq.
crossed_jerz.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Men from Arabia wear curved daggers (called khanjars in Oman) to show their status and manhood - except in Musandam. Here they carry a small axe, often finely decorated, called a jerz.

flamingo.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
This flamingo is well camouflaged in what remains of Khasab creek near the fort. No red algae to feed on to render it beautiful pink.
khasab_airport.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Khasab International Airport was opened in late 2003 to accommodate larger aircraft flying from Dubai.
khasab_central_roundabout.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
The central roundabout at Khasab boasting a model of a rosewater sprinkler. A mosque in view, and government offices are based nearby.
khasab_creek.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Or rather, the other creek. The inlet opposite Khasab Fort is being filled in, so the romantic views of the fort will be no more.
khasab_fort_renovation.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Khasab Fort was under renovation when I visited. This photo does not do it justice. The fort was built by the Portuguese originally in the 17th century. It has been the Wali's (governor's) residence, and also a jail.
