Oman vistas - photos, travel tips, insights, Musandam and Muscat, Oman

Discover Oman. Take a photo trip to Muscat, Nakhal Fort and the springs at Rustaq. How should women dress to visit the Grand Mosque in Al Ghubrah? Spy by boat on the developing resort at Barr al Jissah.  Cruise the fiords and watch the smugglers in Musandam, northern Oman, overlooking the Straits of Hormuz.

My thanks to Khasab Travel and Tours and to the Golden Tulip Khasab Hotel for part-sponsoring my trip to Musandam in March 2004. For current news and headlines about Oman, visit newsBriefsoman

Description:
The Arabs love camel racing. Racing camels are highly prized and very expensive, fetching up to half a million US dollars and maybe more. These animals are being reared on a farm in the desert.

Description:
The dune safari rested at a campsite where we had an ample barbecue, drove dune buggies and were entertained with belly dancing. An emirati lady offered henna tattooing for the women. Guinea fowl roamed the camp. Silly birds they are too.

Description:
Dune driving was the most exciting thing I managed to do in Dubai. Except that I wasn't driving myself. We were picked up from our hotels and taken in convoy to the site west of the Dubai-Al Ain road. This was a stop to admire the view - dunes.

Darren and Neil were in my jeep. They were out in Dubai for a friend's wedding and decided to get out of the hotel. Sand in your shoes Darren?

downtown_day.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Downtown Dubai from the roof of my hotel - the Imperial Suites. The guests were mostly Asian, en route from UK to India and back again, or businessmen. Dubai always seems to be hazy. Sand in the air.
downtown_night.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
Downtown Dubai by night from the roof of my hotel. The building with the flashing blue light is the Crowne Plaza Dubai. A bit more upmarket than mine. As for the famous Burj Dubai Hotel, it costs £50 just to enter the doors. Decided not to go.

Description:
I got brave and tried the dune buggies too, but shied away from steep slopes. These guys were far more adventurous.

Description:
This was just such a lovely sight. Very red dunes under a cloudy sky.

A young, smart Emirati holds his falcon at the safari campsite. He offers qawa (Arabic coffee) and dates at the entrance to his Bedu tent.

This is the UAE destination in Ras al Khaimah for those Iranian goats brought across the Straits of Hormuz. See the pics in Iranian Smugglers at Khasab.
