Oman vistas - photos, travel tips, insights, Musandam and Muscat, Oman

Discover Oman. Take a photo trip to Muscat, Nakhal Fort and the springs at Rustaq. How should women dress to visit the Grand Mosque in Al Ghubrah? Spy by boat on the developing resort at Barr al Jissah.  Cruise the fiords and watch the smugglers in Musandam, northern Oman, overlooking the Straits of Hormuz.

My thanks to Khasab Travel and Tours and to the Golden Tulip Khasab Hotel for part-sponsoring my trip to Musandam in March 2004. For current news and headlines about Oman, visit newsBriefsoman

Description:
The dolphins are the highlight of the fiord cruise, but they didn't feel particularly playful the day I went. This was the best shot I managed to get. Perhaps they get fed up with lots of dhows circling round them for strangers to gawp.

Description:
The dolphins love to play with the dhows, and will cut under and across the prows keeping exact speed with the boats. They must prefer to take it easy in the afternoons.

The limestone cliffs rise straight and steeply out of the water.
fiord_view1.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
The cliffs appear to have been partially submerged giving rise from the air to a fiord-like appearance.

Description:
Musandam is often described as 'The Norway of Arabia' because of the fiords.
fishing_dhow.jpg

Actual Size
Description:
This slim dhow is piled high with nets and ropes ready for the next fishing trip. I'm not sure to what extent this vessel might be ocean-going.

Description:
Rough shelters on rock ledges just above the water, house fishing tackle.

Description:
Fishing catches are primarily sardines and mackerel, but tuna can be found further out to sea.

Actual Size
Description:
The limestone of Musandam generally dips gently southwards. Occasionally, as here, you can see a kink in the rocks.
